"This is America", la canción de Childish Gambino, recibió cinco estatuillas. En la categoría más importante, la de mejor disco del año, fue reconocida Kacey Musgraves por su álbum Golden Hour.
La Academia Nacional de Artes y Ciencias de la Grabación de los Estados Unidos llevó a cabo la edición número 61 de los premios Grammy. La ceremonia se realizó en el Staples Center de los Ángeles y, después de 14 años, contó con la conducción de una mujer: Alicia Keys.
Childish Gambino, que no asistió a la ceremonia, fue uno de los grandes ganadores de la noche: su tema "This is América" se consagró como la mejor canción, grabación, video musical y performance de rap/sung. De todas formas, en la categoría más importante, la de mejor disco del año, fue reconocida Kacey Musgraves por su álbum Golden Hour.
El mejor disco de rap fue para Invasion of Privacy de Cardi B, mientras que la mejor canción de rap fue "God's Plan" de Drake. Dua Lipa se consagró como la mejor nueva artista.
Lady Gaga fue otra de las cantantes reconocidas en los Grammy: la canción que interpretó junto a Bradley Cooper para la película A Star is born, "Shallow", ganó en las categorías mejor dúo pop y mejor composición para medio audiovisual. Además, recibió otras dos estatuillas a la mejor performance de pop solista y mejor performance solista por "Joanne (Where do you think you're goin'?)".
